Story

Thanks for taking the time to visit my JustGiving page.

At the age of 74 my mother had a planned operation for an aortic aneurism repair. It was successful. However she had two heart attacks and a stroke a week later. The stroke went unrecognised until my brother and I alerted the medical team that there was something wrong. My mother developed epilepsy 6 months later after the stroke. She experienced focal seizures and tonic clonic seizures.

Four years later she was admitted to hospital after falling and breaking her pelvis. While in hospital she had a major tonic clonic seizure and never recovered. I understood the condition because I worked for Epilepsy Action at the time of diagnosis.

My mother had the most undignified death. She couldn’t do anything for herself and was reliant on the nurses to feed and wash her. She lingered on for four months in this state slowly and agonisingly drifting away from us. She never spoke again. She never smiled again. My family's hearts were breaking. She died in May 2007. I think about her every day.

Please support Epilepsy Action. They are a brilliant charity. Thank you for reading my story.
